What is an Airside Driving Medical?

An Airside Driving Medical is a health assessment mandated for personnel who operate vehicles in airside areas of airports, including runways, taxiways, and other secure zones. This examination ensures that drivers are medically fit to handle the unique challenges of the airside environment, thereby maintaining safety and compliance with aviation regulations.

Who Needs This Medical Examination?

Any individual required to drive within the airside environment must undergo this medical assessment. This includes operators of various vehicles such as:

  • Aircraft cleaners

  • De-icing vehicles

  • Passenger transport buses

  • Ambulift vehicles

  • Ramp vehicles

  • Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs)

Ensuring medical fitness is crucial for the safety of all airside operations.

What to Expect During the Medical Examination?

Our Airside Driving Medicals are conducted in line with the Airport Operators Association (AOA) standards, which approximate the DVLA Group 2 medical standards. The examination includes:

  • Vision Assessment: Evaluation of distance and near vision, including colour perception tests.

  • Hearing Test: Assessment to ensure adequate hearing capabilities.

  • Cardiovascular Evaluation: Blood pressure measurement and heart health assessment.

  • General Health Review: Discussion of medical history and current medications.

These evaluations help confirm your fitness to operate vehicles safely in airside areas.

You may be given a questionnaire to answer in order to screen for medical problems. It is useful to bring with you any specialist medical reports from your hospital doctor or GP if you have ever suffered with significant illnesses in the past or any ongoing problems.

Please bring with you:

Current passport or Photo ID

Last Medical Certificate (if applicable)

Any eye / optometry prescription

Copies of any relevant Specialist Medical/GP Reports

If any further tests are required by your employer, please let us know in advance. Extra charges may be applicable in such cases.

How often do I require Airside Driving Medical Assessments?

The standard requirement for renewing an Airside Driving Medical is every three years.

However, this interval may vary based on factors such as your age, health status, and specific job responsibilities. It's essential to consult with your employer or the relevant airport authority to determine the exact renewal schedule applicable to your role,
